Construction Resumes At La Torretta Del Lago Resort & Spa™ Near Houston In Wake Of Hurricane Ike
Property to Serve as Site for Society of American Travel Writers Post Conference Trip

MONTGOMERY, TX – September 24, 2008 – While the Lake Conroe area, located approximately one hour north of Houston, experienced considerable water and wind effects, including flooding and power interruption, from Hurricane Ike, damage to La Torretta Del Lago Resort & Spa was small. Construction resumed on the $130-million destination late last week with the assistance of generators and gas incentives, which proved successful in expediting the return of crews to the job site. The property’s sewer plant, which also serves surrounding homes, was operational within 24 hours of the hurricane’s passing.
While the opening of the luxury, lakefront resort and its golf course was initially scheduled for mid-October, the loss of power and cleanup, which involved the removal of more than 50 mature, fallen trees and storm debris, has pushed the public debut to November 1, 2008. Beginning October 22nd, however, La Torretta Del Lago Resort & Spa will be providing a special three-night, pre-opening preview for members of the Society of American Travel Writers (SATW) in conjunction with their annual conference, which will be taking place in Houston this year.
No stranger to storms of this magnitude, French Quarter Hospitality, made use of their 2004 experience when Hurricane Ivan caused much more sever damage to their properties in Fort Walton Beach, FL. Based on that experience, French Quarter quickly mobilized to reschedule meetings and events at their stand-alone, 70,000-square-foot conference facility. The majority of business was salvaged – a number of clients also inquired about assistance to shift events to later dates due to Ike – and the property is working to confirm a number of groups previously booked in the Galveston and Clear Lake areas.
Ronnie Ben-Zur, CEO of French Quarter Hospitality said, “We were fortunate to have been spared the brunt of the storm, and by acting fast and decisively, have been able to significantly minimize construction delays. Our heart goes out to those less fortunate who were impacted severely by Hurricane Ike.”

LONDON – September 3, 2008 – Wyatt T. Maguire has been named chef de cuisine of Chez Roux, the first stand alone restaurant in the United States to bear the name and pedigree of Master Chef Albert Roux. One of the world’s most honored and respected chefs, Roux’s Le Gavroche was the first restaurant in the UK to earn three Michelin stars, and its kitchen has been a training ground for notables such as Gordon Ramsay and Marco Pierre White. Scheduled to debut in early 2009, Chez Roux will serve as the signature restaurant for La Torretta Del Lago Resort & Spa, a $130-million destination opening in November 2008 on a lush peninsula overlooking idyllic Lake Conroe, where the Texas Gulf Coast meets the Texas Piney Woods. Located just an hour north of Houston, La Torretta Del Lago Resort & Spa will offer amenities unlike anything else in the region.
A trusted and talented Roux protégé, Maguire will oversee day-to-day operations for the 50-seat, waterfront fine dining venue, which will feature contemporary French cuisine incorporating the bounty of local and regional ingredients. Maguire began working with Roux in 2005, when he joined the culinary team at Le Gavroche in London as demi chef de partie. In this capacity he oversaw both the fish and meat sections in addition to executing daily and weekly specials. His skill and attention to detail soon led to a position with Albert Roux Consultancy. This role brought the Rhode Island native back to the US as a sous chef at the Merrill Lynch corporate offices in New York where he produced custom menus for executive dining, meetings and events. Maguire is currently in London at Le Gavroche developing recipes and menus for Chez Roux and will remain there until late fall when he begins training on site at La Torretta Del Lago Resort & Spa.
Prior to Le Gavroche, Maguire was employed as a commis at Thomas Keller’s acclaimed Bouchon bistro in Yountville, CA. A 2003 graduate of Johnson & Wales University in Provide, RI, Maguire holds a bachelors degree of Applied Science in Culinary Arts. While still in school, he held sous chef positions at 1200 Ocean Grill in Narragansett, RI and at Caylily’s Bistro in Wakefield, RI where he worked until 2005.
Inspired by foreign cuisine and culture, his first overseas working experience was at Victor’s restaurant at the Westin Tokyo in Japan. As an intern there, he was first introduced to a European style brigade system, prepared foods using classical French techniques and concentrated in garde manger and dessert preparation. Not long after, he was placed 4th in the Academie Cuinaire de France US tryouts, where he first caught Roux’s eye.

La Torretta Del Lago Resort & Spa™ To Debut Redesigned Waterfront Golf Complex
As Part Of $130-Million Property Enhancement On Lake Conroe Near Houston

MONTGOMERY, TX – August 18, 2008 – La Torretta Del Lago Resort & Spa, formerly Del Lago Resort, is nearing the November 2008 debut of its premier golf course and clubhouse, both of which are being completely redesigned as part of a $130-million ground-up property renovation and expansion spearheaded by new ownership and under the management expertise of French Quarter Hospitality. Following an initial offering of founding memberships to homeowners living on the course, a limited number of memberships will be available by invitation. Located on a lush peninsula overlooking idyllic Lake Conroe, where the Texas Gulf Coast meets the Texas Piney Woods, La Torretta Del Lago Resort & Spa will offer a business and leisure destination unlike anything else in the region.
La Torretta Del Lago Resort & Spa will feature 445 luxury guest accommodations, including a cluster of golf cottages with expansive living areas, vaulted ceilings plus one- and two-bedroom configurations. Guests will also enjoy nine, premium food and beverage outlets, such as the Last Putt Lounge and signature restaurant from Master Chef Albert Roux, 70,000 square feet of meeting and event space, a 10,000-square-foot fitness center, 17,000-square-foot spa, racquetball courts, tennis center, 300 slip marina, 18-hole miniature golf course and 3.5-acre Aqua Park with beach, Lay-Z River™ Rapids plus five swimming and activity pools.
Once a well-regarded course, a feature which serves as the entry point to the property, the asset had fallen into a state of abandonment and near disrepair. In April 2007, French Quarter Hospitality commissioned designer Jeffrey Blume, a Robert von Hagge protégé, of Jeffrey D. Blume Limited not only to bring the course up to par, but also to position it among the finest in the Houston area. Blume’s major challenge was to lengthen the course to accommodate today’s farther driving clubs and balls without access to available land for expansion due to surrounding homes. Significant in this process was the redesign of holes four and thirteen, which were changed from par fives to par fours, reducing overall par from 72 to 71. The new course plays approximately 100 yards longer, but the effective length of approach shots has more than doubled that figure. In addition to lengthening the course, Blume laid a variety of new grasses, including 419 Tifway Bermuda grass on the tees, fairways, and roughs and Tifdwarf Bermuda grass on the greens.
To better serve resort guests and members, the 20-year-old clubhouse has also undergone a complete transformation by locally-based project architect Robert McKinney. The intent of the renovation was to create a more cohesive presence with other existing and new structures while significantly enhancing the interior in a way that would honor the history and traditions of the game. The result is a modern, streamlined exterior and plush, timeless interior featuring richly patterned carpet, natural wood accents and a neutral paint palette.
In addition to the Last Putt Lounge, which will offer cocktail, casual dining and snack offerings throughout the day, highlights will include an elegant reception area and large pro shop. Members will have access to a private lounge as well as men’s and women’s locker rooms.
The uniqueness of the course at La Torretta Del Lago Resort & Spa lies in the variety of experiences within its eighteen holes. The front nine start play through a hilly, pine forest on holes one, two and three, but then breaks into a relatively flat landscape that is dominated by a grove of hardwood trees. The end of the front nine – holes seven, eight and nine – return to pine forest, but remain on relatively flat ground. The majority of the back nine – holes 10 through 15 – play through hilly terrain dominated again by hardwood trees. This is contrasted by holes 16 through 18, which return to the pine forest. The diversity in contouring the vegetation makes the golf course distinctive and provides a myriad of challenges to the player.
“I endeavored to enhance the natural attributes of the property wherever possible to achieve the proper relationships between the golf course features. This is particularly evident in the depth of the bunkering and the contouring of the fairways. Most Houston area golfers are used to relatively flat playing surfaces and this is certainly not the case at La Torretta Del Lago’s course.
Signature holes start with number seven, a medium length par four that is routed adjacent to two lakes on the left of the fairway. A series of four bunkers are located short and left of the green, while two bunkers flank the right side of the putting surface. The ninth hole is a short risk/reward par five that plays through a narrow stand of pine trees. The approach shot is played over a lake to the largest green on the course. The putting surface incorporates substantial contour and is flanked on the front and right side by two bunkers.
The 16th is a medium length par five that plays uphill on the tee shot and downhill on the second and/or approach shots. The tee shot must be played to avoid two bunkers on the left of the fairway, while the second must be played short of a lake beyond the landing area. The approach shot is played to a green that is perched on the lake and is flanked by three bunkers behind and to the right of the putting surface. The green is long, but oriented across the line of play, placing a premium on accuracy for the approach.
Lastly, the 18th hole is another medium length par five that plays uphill on the tee shot and downhill on the second and/or approach shots. The tee shot must be played over or to the left of a landmark pine tree located to the right of the fairway. The second and approach shots plays downhill to a green guarded by a lake and large bunker to the right.
La Torretta Del Lago Resort & Spa is located at 600 La Torretta Boulevard in Montgomery, TX approximately 45 minutes north of George Bush Intercontinental Airport and one hour north of downtown Houston. Chez Roux at La Torretta Del Lago Resort & Spa
Internationally acclaimed Chef Albert Roux to create new restaurant

HOUSTON, TEXAS - Ronnie Ben-Zur, owner of the new La Torretta Del Lago Resort & Spa, has reached an agreement with one of the world’s most acclaimed chefs and restaurateurs to create a signature, fine-dining restaurant on the grounds of the Lake Conroe retreat.
Chef Albert Roux, named with his brother by their peers as the most influential chefs in the United Kingdom and whose London restaurant became the first ever in the United Kingdom to hold the coveted three stars by the Michelin Guide, will create Chez Roux as the premiere dining venue among the more than 10 restaurants and cafes to operate at the resort. Its creation adds La Torretta to a remarkable list of famed, overseas dining destinations under the Albert Roux Consultancy umbrella.
Chez Roux is soon to be under construction and will be a free-standing, upscale facility located on the lake shore. The famed chef agreed to give the restaurant his name because of his close involvement in the project and will be directly and personally involved in guiding the creation of a contemporary French menu with heavy emphasis on local and fresh products to give it a hint of Texas flavor. The restaurant is projecting opening by year’s end.
With this restaurant by Albert Roux, La Torretta will join the select company of The Walbrook Club in London, Inverlochy Castle in Scotland, The Ellington in Leeds, Brasserie Roux in London’s Sofitel St. James, the Grand Jersey Hotel in the Channel Islands and the Compass Group where Roux is chairman of its Contract Catering Division, Roux Fine Dining. As the only American restaurant in the group, Chez Roux has become a primary focus of Roux’s many projects.
World wide, the accolades for Albert Roux and his brother, are among the highest for any chefs. In 2002, UK Foreign Minister Jack Straw described the brothers as “two of Britain’s finest ambassadors who have greatly enhanced Britain’s gastronomic standing in the world.” Straw continued to describe their influence, saying, “Thirty years ago, just the phrase ‘British cuisine’ would have led to a belly laugh. That we can now talk proudly of ‘British cuisine’ owes a huge amount to the outstanding work of the Roux brothers.”
Albert Roux was already a professional French chef when he arrived in Britain in the 1960s, having worked as a private chef for several of the world’s most influential and wealthy families. His first restaurant was Le Gavroche, which opened in London’s Lower Sloane Street. In 1981, the restaurant was moved to Brook Street, and it was there, one year later, that it became the first restaurant in the UK to obtain the highest accolade in the gastronomic world, three stars by the Michelin Guide.
While Chef Roux will not be in residence at La Torretta year round, he is already scheduled for a series of week-long visits beginning Oct. 19 and continuing through 2009, during which numerous special culinary events will be planned. In his absence, Chez Roux will be presided over by a chef personally selected by Albert Roux and trained at Le Gavroche. The restaurant and chef will be supported by a professional staff trained under Roux’s guidance to meet the specifically high standards of a Roux property. In addition, Chef Roux will be giving general consultancy on the rest of the dining facilities at the resort.
Construction of La Torretta Del Lago is well underway with an official opening date targeted for early October, 2008. The addition of Chez Roux will add to La Torretta Del Lago’s future international status as one of the ultimate Texas destinations for pampering, recreation and conferencing in the state’s most beautiful lake and forest terrains.
Backed with an investment of approximately $130 million, La Torretta Del Lago Resort & Spa is being planned as a world-class business and leisure lodging facility. When completed this fall, the 445-room resort will offer in addition to the state-of-the-art spa facilities, internationally-recognized dining options, an 18-hole golf course, upscale mini-golf course, lake activities, swimming and water sports. The meticulously-planned, self-contained property is located on one of the most beautiful shorelines of Lake Conroe and is less than 90 minutes from Houston and 45 minutes from the George Bush Intercontinental Airport.
French Quarter VIII LLLP, a Houston-based hospitality firm which is part of Mr. Ben-Zur’s French Quarter Group and of which he is president, acquired the former Del Lago Golf Resort and Conference Center after the 25-year-old property closed last year. Far more than a renovation, the plans for the once-popular Del Lago include a combination of services and amenities found only at leading resorts of the world. All rooms are a minimum of 600 square feet, divided into separate sleeping rooms and living rooms and include spacious bathrooms. Guests will have free high-speed internet connections, two 42-inch flat-screen televisions in each room and top-of-the-line furnishings. The resort will have more than 70,000 square feet of meeting space. Some of the rooms are in villas, each with their own boat slip, located on the lake’s shores and cottages located on the golf course for group, family or romantic getaways.
With the 22,000-acre Lake Conroe as its closest neighbor, La Torretta will provide guests with options to boat, sail, jet ski or just bask on its private white-sand beach. The all new, modern, stand-alone spa facility with 20 treatment rooms will offer a variety of standard and specialty treatments and services. Six swimming pools - including a 6,400 square-foot pool, an infinite edge elevated pool and a uniquely designed Lay-Z River amusement ride- will be complemented by three hot-tubs spas to create one of the largest aquatic centers in any U.S. hotel. The famed 18-hole, par 71 golf course has also been completely reconstructed. Miniature golf and a myriad of planned activities add yet more to the guest options.
Not unlike a lighthouse to ocean mariners, the gleaming, 20-story main building of the resort stands along the tree-lined shores of the magnificent Lake Conroe, promising escape, comfort and safe harbor. It is this impressive tower - La Torretta - that gives this one-of-a-kind luxury resort its name.
